The Monastery was founded in 1380 by Prince Lengvenis.
In 1563 during the Livonian War some monks had been killed, some had to escape. Until 1605 the Monastery was empty, and after that it became Uniate.
The stone Assumption Church was built in 1801-1808 years.
In 1839 the Monastery was returned to the Orthodox believers.
In 1864 the stone Temple of Nativity of Mary was built and in 1865 the Church of the Intercession was built.
At the end of the XIX century the Bell tower was erected.
After the revolution of 1918 the Monastery was closed and looted.
In 1943 during World War II the Monastery was blown up by the Germans.
In 2003 the work on the restoration of the Monastery began.
During the restoration of the Monastery the image of Jesus Christ was found on the wall, it is considered to be miraculous.
