Каменецкая вежа располагается на высоком холме рядом с полноводной когда-то рекой Лесной. На 30 метров возвышается величественное строение.
near the Lesnaya river
Kamenyets is located on a hill next to the once full-flowing river Lesnaya. Thick walls crowned rectangular battlements. Tower has resemblance with big chess piece - rook. Numerous decorative and structural elements are of the early Gothic and Romanesque architecture.
Structures such as Tower of Kamenyets were called Donjon. Donjon - this is the main Tower feudal castle, which served as a final defense and refuge during the enemy attack. There was space for housing and stocks of provisions. She stood apart from other buildings of the castle, and was designed for circular bombardment of enemies. Such towers are typical characteristic of medieval European military architecture. In the tenth century, they spread to the northern and western lands of Europe, in the XIII - in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, the Baltic States. There are donjons on the territory of modern Belarus - Grodno, Brest, Turov, Novogrudok, Kamenyetz, Polotsk. But only one have survived - Tower of Kamenyets.
Building Donjon was done because of change of battle tactful methods. While storming special tools have been applied: ditches fills up with bundles of branches, light ladders were used to climb on the walls. But the main achievement was the invention of stone-hurling machines of great destructive power. They threw stones, "that four men can lift,"and, more importantly, these machines were set at a distance of 100 - 150 meters from the walls of the city's siege. Earlier shooting from the city walls did not allow to get close to them , but stone-hurling machines helped to paralyze it. It was enough to smash walls with the stones and defenders could lost the screen. Then this part was shelled from the bows, suppressing the last defense, after which the successful overcoming of the wall was provided. That was the basic principle of the assault, and the older types of fortresses gradually lost its original meaning. That is when stone and brick donjons became central defense fortresses. They allowed defenders to conduct fire from bows and crossbows, providing long-range bombardment of vast areas and were virtually inaccessible for siege equipment of the time.
One day lord Vladimir Vasilkovich decided to strengthen the northern border of Beresteiskaya land. On his orders Oleksa,an experienced costructor, who went for swampy Pripyat and Mukhavets in search of a place for a new settlement. With locals, he went rowing up the Lesnaya river and found a shore with a hill nearby. After that he returned to the the lord. Vladimir Vasilkovich with his escort went to look at this place and approved Olleksa's choice. And soon, over the Pushcha expanses of overgrown winding ribbon of the river, proudly towered Tower. The exact date of its origin is not preserved.
Kamenetskaya Vezha is often called White. It happened because of historians of the XIX century who believed that the ancient donjon was whitewashed. But in reality this tower had never been whitewashed, except niches on the fifth tier. The true color is due to the color of the brick which is dark red and yellow.
