The history of the Mogilev Regional Drama Theater goes back 117 years. It was built in 1888 on the donations of citizens almost as all temples in Russia were built. Citizens of Mogilev knew that they needed theater for the development of the city as a cultural center. The building which has the title of one of the most beautiful in the city, was built on the square near Muravievsky park, it is one of the main attractions of Mogilev.
The theater has hard and interesting fate. Until 1928 Mogilev Drama Theater has no permanent troupe. In 1928 the founder of the first stable theater in Mogilev actor and director V. Kumelsky created in Mogilev Russian traveling troupe (of 28 people). In 1931 the team became known as the First Russian theater of BSSR, and in 1932 it became known as the State Russian theater of BSSR.
The war caught the theater on tour in Bialystok, the theater was forced to stop its work. And in 1944 the theater returned to the liberated Mogilev. Then from April 1945 till June 1947 the theater worked in Grodno, and in July 1947 the State Russian Drama Theater of the BSSR was transferred to the capital of Belarus (now it is National Academic Drama Theater named after M. Gorky.). Until 1953 the theater building in Mogilev remained without a permanent host. In 1954 Pinsk Regional Drama Theater was transferred to Mogilev and was named the Mogilev Regional Drama Theater.
