Art Gallery was opened on February 5, 2002 as a town's gratitude to the artist who gifted a collection of 50 paintings which became the base of the gallery. The exposition of the Gallery tells the story of the life and work of one of the most reputed artists of Belarus, Gavriil Vaschenko. The wife of the artist Matilda Vashchenko gave the city a collection of 70 works by modern Belarusian artists, friends and students of Gavriil. Currently the collection is constantly updated by the works of different artists and has about 400 paintings.

The paintings of Gavriil Vaschenko are in the collections of 30 large museums of the world including the Tretyakov Gallery. At the same time the largest collection of paintings and sketches of monumental works of the artist for more than 50 years is in Gomel, many of the paintings are devoted to native Polesye. Area of the Gallery is 895 m2. Exhibition area is 313 m2.

A lot of different cultural events for various segments of the population are held in the Gallery. Lecture hall of the Gallery is equipped with multimedia equipment; lectures, meetings with artists, celebrations, various holidays and anniversaries are held here. There are more than 30 exhibitions held covering almost all genres of contemporary art annually.

The modernization of the facilities of the new exhibition hall of 391 m2 was completed in 2011. Now exhibition hall includes exhibition space itself, art gallery and store for artists. There is Art Salon in the Gallery, where a wide range of paintings, souvenirs, books and products for the artists is presented, there is also a children's Sunday Arts Studio.
