The Upper Town has been the center of Minsk since the XVI century. There were upper market, Minsk City Hall, churches, monasteries, synagogues, estates of wealthy people and aristocrats. Despite many wars and destruction during long history of Minsk both historical layout of the streets and Upper Town remained almost unchanged, a lot of unique monuments of different eras and styles are preserved.
The ensemble includes Liberty Square, Revolutionary Street, Herzen street, street of Kirill and Methodius, International street, Musical alley, part of the Komsomolskaya street and Engels street. The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, the Church of Saint Joseph, and the Church of Saint Virgin Mary are unique monuments of Baroque architecture of Belarus. Modern elements of the Trinity Hill were formed in the early XIX century.
Layout known since the 12th century was carried out in accordance with the canons of classicism, according to which all city streets should be crossed at right angles, forming square and rectangular blocks. Stone houses on the street were closely adjoined to each other, creating a common line with the facade. The architect took into account local traditions, which are expressed in a typical decoration of facades and roofs with high attics and penthouse. The Trinity Hill was restored in 1980.
